Research highlights: Domestication of indigenous fruit trees in Malawi

This paper gives highlights of research work that has been conducted in Malawi on indigenous fruit tree species. This includes propagation of indigenous fruit trees using different pre-treatment regimes as well as field testing of promising species. Work done by the University of Malawi on evaluation of nutritional value of promising fruit trees is also reported. Following farmers' surveys, a number of priority fruit tree species have been identified including Uapaca kirkiana, Parinari curatellifolia, Strychnos cocculoides, Flacourtia indica, Azanza garckeana, Annona senegalensis, Vangueria infausta, Syzigium owariense Adansonia digitata and Ficus sycormorus. While range wide collections for some priority species have been done and field-testing is in progress, more information needs to be collected on the subject. This includes promotion of utilization and processing to increase the market potential; and detailed understanding of the ecology and reproductive biology of the different species.
