Use of diameter distributions in sustained-use management of forests: Examples from South Africa

Sustained-use management of the uneven-aged, mixed deciduous and evergreen forests of Southern Africa is required to provide for the needs of future generations for resources from the forests. Sustained-use management requires information on regeneration requirements of the component species in order to develop suitable silvicultural and regeneration systems. Comparison of the diameter distribution structure of a species population over different forest types which represent different regrowth stages, or site conditions or disturbance histories, can be used to provide preliminary models of regeneration requirements or stand dynamics. This can be used in yield regulation and in development of silvicultural systems for sustained-use forest management. Examples of the use of diameter distributions in the management of Afromontane evergreen forest in the Cape and Transvaal Provinces of South Africa, and in deciduous woodlands of Kavango and Eastern Caprivi in Namibia are discussed.
