Conservation of indigenous forests in Zambia: An overview

The need to conserve and protect indigenous forests in the Southern African region is of paramount importance and a greater necessity today then has been the case in the past. The rapid industrial development-taking place, sometimes unplanned or ill-planned, has a devastating effect on the natural forests. The high population growth rate, followed by high demand for land to build houses, building materials, fuelwood, etc., are depleting the natural forests. It is for these reasons that conservationists, researchers, and scientists and their representative governments should work together to make and provide adequate policies for the conservation of our indigenous forests. This paper attempts to discuss the values and problems in nature conservation, and the need for close contact in the region in order to effectively manage our indigenous forests to protect the environment and ensure sustainability of the forest resources.
