Problems with management of natural forests in Malawi
1997
Lowore, J. D.
Unlike plantation monocultures, natural forests are complex in nature, showing considerable variation in species composition, variation and structure. The diverse nature of these forests is in part the reason for the problems foresters face in managing them. In Malawi, problems in managing natural forests vary and include: limiting public access and exploitation of forest resources because of the current forest policy; inadequate knowledge concerning the complex ecology and dynamics of natural forests; insufficient knowledge of the growing stock as a result of lack of inventories; and little knowledge of natural regeneration, carrying capacity and sustainable exploitation of these indigenous forests. The level of training of most Forest Managers working in indigenous forests is inadequate and at times inappropriate. This paper highlights some of the problems Malawi experiences in managing natural forests.
