Fire blight is an important disease of Maloideae subfamily of Rosaceae in more than 40 countries in the world. Application of resistant cultivars is the most effective and economic method to control damages of the disease. To find resistant cultivars for subsequent use at the breeding programs, correlation between fire blight resistance and different vegetative and reproductive characteristics were evaluated in 75 apple cultivars, divided in three native, foreign and spur type groups. Evaluation of resistance was carried out by natural infection through using the severity (IS), percentage of infected shoots (IINF) and USDA (IUSDA) indexes, in two years of disease epiphytoty (1998-1999). The highest frequency of resistant cultivars was observed in spur type (66.7%), native (59.5%) and foreign (43.6%) groups. In addition, the frequency of resistance in the native cultivars originated from the North East region of Iran was approximatly twice higher than in cultivars from the North West. In the native apple cultivars, percentage of shot lignification had a significant correlation with fire blight resistance, while in the foreign and spur type cultivars, the internode length and tre growth, respectively, had the highest correlation with the fire blight rsistance
