Due to its geographical location, agro-ecological conditions and technical-technological possibilities our country was classified as a country suitable for seed production. Seed has always been a significant strategic product for one country. Wheat seed is produced on some 30,000 ha in Serbia and Montenegro. There is a slight decline in production of domestic maize seed hybrids, which production of foreign hybrids is increasing. Areas under soybean seed are increasing each year, while production of sugar beet seed is stagnating. From fodder crops, alfalfa, fodder pea and vetch seed are produced on significant areas. Seed production is regulated by the Seed law (Official gazette RS , no. 45/05), Law on variety protection of agricultural and forest plants (Offical gazette SRY, no. 24/98), and Law on genetically modified organisms (Official gazette SRY, no. 21/01). These laws are accompanied by a great number of regulative.
