Field experiments were carried out to study the effects of zinc application on quality traits of 11 barley cultivars in semiarid zones. Zinc sulphate (0 and 23 kg/ha) was incorporated into soil before sowing. The experimental design was split plot with four replications. The effect of Zn on thousand grain weight (TGW), protein and starch concentrations varied according to the genotype. A significant increase in TGW was determined in cultivars Tokak 157/37 and Cumhuriyet 50, for protein concentration in Orza, Buelbuel 89 and Anadolu 86, for starch concentration in Karatay 94 and Cumhuriyet 50. A significant decrease in TGW was found in cultivars Karatay 94 and Obruk 86, in protein concentration in Karatay 94, Cumhuriyet 50 and Tarm 92. When feeding and malting quality are considered together, Karatay 94 and Cumhuriyet 50 are the most suitable cultivars for growing in zinc-applied soils of semiarid areas.
