Influence of growth rate, backfat thickness and meatiness on reproduction efficiency in Landrace gilts

The influence of weight gain from birth in the performance test and till mating, average backfat thickness in the performance test and at mating, lean meat percentage on the age and weight at mating and at farrowing, on the number of piglets (born, born alive and weaned) and litter weight at 21 days was evaluated in 262 Landrace gilts. As shown by our results, most of the studied reproductive variables were significantly influenced by the growth performance of the gilts. The influence of the high growth ability on the reproductive traits studied was detected especially during the performance test. On the contrary, at the period of mating, reproductive traits were mostly affected by backfat thickness and meatiness.
