Studies on some non-chemical insect pest management options on farm-stored maize in Ethiopia

The major cereals produced in Ethiopia include maize, tef, wheat, barley millet and oats. Maize is first in production and yield and second to tef in area coverage. The bulk of maize produced by resource poor farmers in the main rain season (June to September), and is retained and stored on the farm. Huge amount of losses are inflicted to grain in storage due to several factors among which insect pests are the most important. Treatment with insecticide chemicals can prevent infestations, however, such products are rarely available to small-scale farmers, and also their use can be dangerous. Hence, it was felt necessary to search for potential alternative storage insect pest control methods that involve little or no synthetic insecticides. The main objective of this study were: 1)To identify effective non-chemical/traditional methods of pest control (inert materials, botanicals, physical/cultural methods) and determine the quantity of application which can provide adequate protection to maize grain. 2) To evaluate the efficacy of some inert materials for the management of insect pests under simulated farm-storage conditions 3)To compare the performance of some farm-storage containers for their suitability to store maize 4) To appraise insect pest problems in farm-storage and identify opportunities for their reduction. 2)To evaluate the efficacy of some inert materials for the management of insect pests under simulated farm-storage conditions. 3)To compare the performance of some farm-storage containers for their suitability to store maize. 4)To appraise insect pest problems in farm-storage and identify opportunities for their reduction
