Farmer participatory variety selection in common beans (Phaseoulus vulgaries L.): a new approach in plant breeding

Farmer Participatory Plant Breeding (FPPB) was used to identify farmers selection criteria and acceptable genotypes. Farmer selection criteria for the two regions, eastern Hararghe (EH) and western Hararghe (WH), have been characterized. The selection criteria suggested by the farmers indicated that separate bean ideotypes are needed for eastern Hararghe and western Hararghe, for belg and meher season and giving breeders a solid set of criteria on which to base selection decision. The genotypes selected based on selection criteria formulated were tested on station, researcher managed on-farm and farmers managed on-farm trials and subjected for preference ranking. Farmer-acceptable cultivars were included among the released and candidate ones. The candidate genotypes, G2816 (Gofta) and GLPx92 (Ayenew), performed better on station and on farm and were accepted by the National Variety Release Committee for release. Awash 1, bean for canning, which is released for the central rift valley, is preferred to Mexican 142 by eastern Ethiopia farmers and is under large scale multiplication for distribution to the farmers in eastern Ethiopia. Selection criteria have been proposed by the farmers in each region. Future breeding and selection of genotypes will incorporate the proposed criteria and priorities of the two regions.
