In the course of undertaking research all crop genetic materials are assigned to unique codes in a convenient order. In general, a code comprisesnames, numbers, letters and symbols such as slash, dash, asterisk and points. The codes are significant to quickly identify the pedigree status of the germplasm in crop improvement program. This paper highlights the practice of pedigree documentation in IAR, the significance of planning pedigree documentation as an essential corporate activity, and standardizing it as an essential tool for enabling pedigree information processing and utilization within a specific crop improvement program. The effect of corporate planning and standardization in relation to pedigree information has been manifested as a reflection of proper identification and utilization of germplasm. Ultimately it is suggested that this complements the enhancement of abilities of researchers to undertake more sophisticated research to benefit farmers and all consumers of the research product.
