Evaluation of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) varieties for their yield and other agronomic performance at Sirinka
2001
Solomon Benor(Sirinka Agricultural Research Center, Sirinka (Ethiopia)) | Hilemichael Shewayrga(Sirinka Agricultural Research Center, Sirinka (Ethiopia))
Experiments were conducted to evaluate seven improved sorghum varieties that represent the high and mid-altitude areas for their yield and yield components at Sirinka Research Center for two years (1996 and 1997). RCB design with three replications was used and data on grain yield, 1000 seed weight, plant height and days to maturity were recorded. There was statistically significant difference among the varieties in plant height, days to flowering and days to maturity but not in yield. Varieties Bakomash and Birmash had yield advantage and showed better agronomic performance. ETS 2752, Alemaya-70 and Chiromash showed poor adaptability. The performance of the local check (Degalit) was highly determined by adequate rainfall early in the planting season.
