Ethyl methane sulphonate treatment of stem cuttings with single leaf and an axillary bud of sexually sterile rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium sp.) cultivar Bourbon has resulted in isolation of a plant with aberrant (narrowly lobed) leaves. The narrowly lobed leaf mutant has been designated as BM-9-M-1. The somatic and meiotic chromosome counts made in cv Bourbon and its narrowly lobed leaf mutant BM-9-M-1 revealed that both the genotypes contain 77 chromosomes. The complete pollen sterility of cv Bourbon and narrowly lobed leaf mutant resulted from their highly irregular meiosis. The mutant and cv Bourbon showed differences in the magnitude of certain agronomic traits, whereas their essential oil quality profiles were similar. The RAPD analysis revealed a high level of overall genetic similarity in cv Bourbon and mutant. However, some marker bands could be identified distinguishing the mutant and cv Bourbon. The colchicine induced tetraploid (2n = 14x = 154) of the mutant showed higher pollen fertility due to mostly bivalent pairing involving homologous chromosomes followed by normal distribution of chromosomes to the poles. All the plants in the selfed progenies of the induced tetraploid of the mutant produced the same narrowly lobed leaf characteristic. On the basis of the above observations it was concluded that the narrowly lobed leaf character is caused by gene(s) mutation

[Il trattamento di talee di fusto con una sola foglia e una gemma ascellare della cv Bourbon di geranio con profumo di rosa (Pelargonium sp.) sessualmente sterile si è tradotto nell´isolamento di una pianta con foglie modificate (a lobi stretti). Tale mutante è stato denominato BM-9-M-1. I conteggi di cromosomi somatici e meiotici effettuati nella cv Bourbon e nel suo mutante BM-9-M-1 ha evidenziato che ambedue i genotipi contengono 77 cromosomi. La sterilità pollinica completa della cv Bourbon e del mutante era dovuta alla loro meiosi altamente irregolare. Il mutante e la cv Bourbon presentavano differenze nell´entità di certi caratteri agronomici, mentre i profili qualitativi dei loro oli essenziali erano simili. L´analisi RAPD ha evidenziato un elevato livello di affinità genetica complessiva tra la cv Bourbon e il mutante. Tuttavia, è stato possibile identificare alcune bande marcatrici che portavano a distinguere il mutante dalla cv Bourbon. Il tetraploide (2n = 14x = 154) indotto con la colchicina presentava una fertilità pollinica più elevata dovuta alla formazione prevalente di bivalenti seguita dalla distribuzione normale ai poli. Tutte le piante nelle progenie autofecondate del tetraploide indotto del mutante producevano la stessa caratteristica dei lobi stretti delle foglie. In base alle osservazioni riportate sopra si è concluso che il carattere delle foglie con lobi stretti è determinato da una o più mutazioni geniche.]
