Sugar1 inbreds to improve sugary enhancer1 hybrids of sweet corn for adaptation to cold areas with short growing seasons [Zea mays L.; Spain]

Sweet corn hybrids (Zea mays L.) homozygous for sugary1 (su1) and sugary enhancer1 (se1) mutants (su1se1 hybrids) have a high eating quality, but reduced emergence and poor early vigour, especially under European Atlantic conditions, characterized by cold and humid Springs and a short growing season. Elite sweet corn inbreds homozygous for the sugary1 mutant and without the sugary enhancer1 modifier (su1 hybrids) have good emergence and early vigour, so they seem adequate to improve the agronomic value of su1se1 hybrids. Our objective was to identify su1 inbreds as potential donors for improving adaptation of some su1se1 hybrids, that we had found previously to have an outstanding eating quality, to Atlantic conditions. Eight su1 inbreds, that we had found in previous works to be well adapted to Atlantic conditions, were chosen. Six different estimators of favourable alleles (micronG´, PTC, UBND, NI, PNGg and PNGceg) and GCA were calculated. micronG´, PTC, NI and UBND give similar estimations for traits related with adaptation when donors are su1 inbreds and receivers are su1se1 hybrids. PNGg and PNGceg give different estimations and, when one of the donors performs very poorly, their estimations are erroneous. According to the estimators, the emergence and early vigour of the 12 su1se1 hybrids used in this study can be improved with some of the su1 inbreds, and so sweet corn hybrids of high quality adapted to areas with cold, humid Springs and a short growing season

[Gli ibridi di mais dolce (Zea mays L.) omozigoti per sugary1 (su1) e sugary enhancer1(se1) mutanti (ibridi su1se1) hanno una buona qualità bromatologica, ma presentano emergenza ridotta e scarso vigore precoce, specialmente nelle condizioni dell´Europa atlantica, caratterizzata da primavere fredde e umide e da una stagione vegetativa breve. Le linee pure elite di mais dolce omozigoti per il mutante sugary1 e senza il modificatore sugary enhancer1(ibridi su1) presentano una buona emergenza e un buon vigore precoce, cosicché sembrano adatte per migliorare il valore agronomico degli ibridi su1se1. Il nostro obiettivo consisteva nell´identificare linee pure su1 come donatori potenziali per migliorare l´adattamento di alcuni ibridi su1se1, che erano stati riconosciuti precedentemente come dotati di una qualità bromatologia rilevante, alle condizioni atlantiche. Sono state scelte otto linee pure su1, che in precedenza avevamo riscontrato come bene adattate alle condizioni atlantiche. Sono stati calcolati sei stimatori di alleli favorevoli (micronG´, PTC, UBND, NI, PNGg e PNGceg) e la GCA. micronG´, PTC, NI e UBND forniscono stime simili per i caratteri correlati all´adattamento quando i donatori sono linee pure su1 e i riceventi sono ibridi su1se1. PNGg e PNGceg danno stime diverse e, quando uno dei donatori presenta un comportamento negativo, le loro stime sono errate. Secondo gli stimatori, l´emergenza e il vigore precoce dei 12 ibridi su1se1 utilizzati in questo studio possono essere migliorati con alcune delle linee pure su1 e così pure gli ibridi di mais dolce di alta qualità posso essere adattati ad aree caratterizzate da primavere umide e fredde e una stagione vegetativa breve.]
