Study on the genetic diversity of popcorn inbreds and their germplasm relationship with normal corn inbreds using SSR markers [Single Sequence Repeats; Zea mays L.; China]

Objectives of this paper were l) to evaluate the level of genetic diversity among popcorn inbreds and 2) to study their genetic relationships with different normal corn inbreds using SSR markers. A total of 56 popcorn inbreds representing a broad genetic background were included in this study; in addition, 21 normal corn inbreds were chosen to represent almost all the heterotic groups present in normal maize breeding programs in China. The results showed that the average number of alleles per locus was 2.71 among 56 popcorn inbreds, 3.58 among 21 normal corn inbreds and 3.66 among all the 77 inbreds. Their genetic distances [D sub(ij)] were 0.3503, 0.5833 and 0.4768, respectively. Cluster analysis of the inbreds, using data for 113 SSR markers loci, classified the two types of inbreds into three groups, which showed the great difference between them and with tropical or subtropical germplasm. The 56 popcorn inbreds and 21 normal corn inbreds were all divided into seven heterotic groups respectively, in good agreement with previous studies and breeding practice. The average D sub(ij) between heterotic groups of popcorn inbreds and normal corn groups were different. In conclusion, these findings suggest that SSR markers could be used for measuring genetic diversity of popcorn inbreds, for assigning them into heterotic groups and for studying their germplasm relationships with normal corn inbreds

[Gli obiettivi di questo contributo erano: 1) valutare il livello di diversità genetica nell´ambito di linee pure di mais popcorn e 2) studiare le loro relazioni genetiche con linee pure diverse di mais normale, utilizzando marcatori SSR. Sono state utilizzate in questo studio 56 linee pure popcorn, che rappresentavano una base genetica ampia; inoltre sono state scelte 21 linee di mais normale per rappresentare quasi tutti i gruppi di eterosi presenti nei programmi cinesi di miglioramento genetico del mais normale. I risultati hanno evidenziato che il numero medio di alleli per locus era 2,71 nelle linee popcorn, 3,58 nelle linee di mais normale e 3,66 nelle 77 linee complessive. Le loro distanze genetiche [D inf(ij)] erano 0,3503, 0,5833 e 0,4768, rispettivamente. L´analisi cluster delle linee pure, utilizzando i dati relativi a 113 loci marker SSR, ha portato alla classificazione dei due tipi di linee pure in tre gruppi, che hanno evidenziato la notevole differenza fra loro e con il germoplasma tropicale e subtropicale. Le 56 linee popcorn e le 21 linee normali sono state suddivise tutte in sette gruppi di eterosi rispettivamente, in buon accordo con studi precedenti e con la pratica di miglioramento genetico. La D inf(ij) media fra gruppi di eterosi delle linee popcorn e gruppi delle linee di mais normale erano diverse.
