Using a Japanese version POMS (Profile of Mood States), which was one kind of questionnaire, the changes of the mood of the rider before and after equitation were examined. The examinee was 22 students in the department of Animal science of Hokkaido University and the 8 horses were used. Through the practices course in the university farm, POMS test were conducted before and after 4 practical classes including 3 equitation and 1 farm practice classes. The moods of tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, confusion and fatigue were decreased after the elementary equitation which included the horse-buck walking compared with before (P<0.05). The moods of the vigor and the fatigue were increased after the horse-trekking compared with before (P<0.05). Elementary equitation would be effective to make moods better and to reduce mental fatigue. Additionally, the horse-trekking in a field and forest could make the equitation effect to be developed.
