Detection of insect inclusions and size estimation of bamboo galls using soft X-rays

Soft X-ray photography was examined for detecting insect inclusions in bamboo galls of Aiolomorphus rhopaloides in two bamboo stands of Phyllostachys heterocycla. We detected A. rhopaloides, Diomorus aiolomorphi and parasitoids by detailed comparison between insect on the X-ray films and insects emerging from the galls and dissected galls. However, we could not identify five parasitoid species. There were significant correlations between the actual diameter of the gall and the diameter measured from the X-ray films.
