Critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of NaCl and CaC12 for kaolinite and montmorillonite was compared under different pH conditions. CCCs for both clays increased with pH, while kaolinite showing more pH dependent. Kaolinite coagulated below pH 6 and dispersed well above that for both Na- and Ca- type of clay after it was dialysed. The CCC of NaCl for kaolinite was 3 times higher than montmorillonite just above pH 6 and 5 times at pH 9. CCC for each clay was represented in relation to salinity and sodicity. At pH 8, CCC for kaolinite was higher than that for montmorillonite at any SAR. This was considered because CCC of kaolinite is substantially influenced by the small size of particles. Therefore, small size of kaolinite may play a critical role in soil deterioration at high sodicity.
