The effect of pre-treatment time in a high-temperature and low-humidity condition on the qualities of sugi [Cryptomeria japonica] dried boxed-heart square timber

The effects of pre-treatment time with high temperature and low humidity on the qualities of kiln-dried sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) boxed-heart square timbers were examined. The results obtained were as follows: (1) A long pre-treatment time was effective in preventing surface checks, however inner checks increased and moisture gradient in timbers became large. (2) The Young's modulus tended to increase and bending work decreased on timbers pre-treated for a longer time at a high temperature and low humidity before kiln drying. (3) To minimize surface checks of the timbers dried by high temperature and low humidity treatment, the pre-treatment may be effective to apply to the green timbers with a moisture content under 90%.
