This study was made to find a more suitable thinning method to decrease the number of damaged trees in multi- storied Karamatsu-Hinoki stands. Overstoried trees were thinned in two types of lines multi-storied stands with different line-width and ordinary multi-storied stands. We found no damaged overstoried trees and 27.8% of damaged trees of understoried in 1-line left, 1-line cut thinning in multi-storied stands. Although damage occurred in 5.3% of the overstoried trees, only 0.7% of the understoried trees in the 3-lines left, 2-lines cut multi-storied stands were damaged. And damage occurred in 12.3% of the overstoried trees and 39.3% of damaged trees of understoried in ordinary multi-storied stands. Damage ratio of residual trees by thinning was lower and less severe damage occurred in line multi-storied stands than in ordinary multi-storied stands. The total ratio of damaged trees in 1-left 1-cut line multi-storied stands was greater than that of 3-1eft 2-cut stands. Thus three or more lines left in multi-storied stands resulted in the least damage to residual trees during the thinning of overstoried trees.
