A new late maturing rice cultivar "Nannkai 157" with good eating quality and good grain appearance was developed at Miyazaki Agricultural Experiment Station in 2004. The characteristics are as fellows. It is a non-glutinous cultivar derived from a combination Nannkai 132/Nannkai 127 (Karinomai) . The heading time and maturity periods are about 4 days later than "Yumehikari" which is a late maturing leading cultivar in western Japan. The panicle number more less than "Yumehikari" and plant type is moderate. It has moderate culm height and is resistant to lodging. The yielding ability is superior to "Yumehikari", the 1000-grain weight is 21.3grams and grain size and shape are moderate. In brast resistance it has genes, Pi- a, Pi-i. The leaf field resistance is moderate and the panicle field resistance is semi-strong. It has no resistance genes to bacterial blight and the field resistance is also slightly susceptible. It has resistance genes to stripe virus disease. The grain appearance is as good as "Yumehikari" and the eating quality is same as "Hinohikari". Since it has best eating quality, the lodging resistance, resistance of disease and late maturing cultivar, "Nannkai 157" is going to be planted southwest and center north area of Miyazaki prefecture in Kyusyu region from 2005.
