The growth characteristic and stable production technique of the sparse planting paddy rice (in 11.1 stock/m2, the space of the stock 30cm, the space of the row 30cm) were studied and compared with the custom planting (in 18.5 stock/m2, the space of the stock 18cm, the space of the row 30cm). On the sparse planting, the number of tillers during the growing period was a little shorter than the custom planting. Moreover, darker leaf color and the higher percentage of fruitful culms were observed in the sparse planting. The difference of heading and maturing date were hardly seen in the sparse and the custom planting. Both of clum and ear length were longer in the sparse planting than the custom. The number of panicles in the unit area was shorter but the number of paddies per 1 ear was higher in the sparse than the custom. Yield and grain quality are about equal between two plantings. The protein content in the grain was a little higher in the sparse planting. The suitable transplanting period of 'AKITAKOMACHI', extremely early variety, for the sparse planting was from April to mid of May. 'KOIGOKORO', early variety, and 'HINOHIKARI', medium variety, was until mid of June in Ehime prefecture. Under the same fertilize application yield and grain quality are equal in the sparse and the custom planting. The mid-summer drainage should be started a little later than the custom planting to avoid decreasing the number of ears and yield. The suitable harvesting time for the sparse planting was same as the custom cultivation.
