The aim of this article is to present the structure and role of small and medium enterprises in food industry. General characteristics and barriers impairing further development of small and medium enterprises are described. It is worth saying that the greatest consideration has SME's which in reality liquidate local unemployment on rural areas. Small and medium enterprises in food industry develop on the local enterprises which gives occasion to active in the local area.
