Analysis of combustion properties of biodiesel and diesel fuel in a direct injection diesel engine

One of the important energy sources, which are intensively used for the powering of transport, is fossil diesel. At present, 194 thousand diesel vehicles are registered in Latvia, and it has a tendency to increase in the nearest future. One of the most alternatives is biodiesel, which is derived from renewable sources and has properties similar to conventional diesel. This paper presents the results of an investigation carried out by the author on the potentiality of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for compression ignition engines. In that case, FORD engine has been bench tested; power, torque and, fuel consumption has been monitored in the Engine Testing and Biofuels Laboratory of LUA. Some of the experimental results have been used to make complete thermo-dynamical calculation and a comparative analysis of combustion properties of biodiesel and diesel fuel in a DI diesel engine. The average composition of the biodiesel has a considerable amount of oxygen (11%) and a reduced amount of carbon (77%), but the hydrogen content is similar. These properties lefts an impact on many of engine mechanical cycle parameters.
