Species-level classification of Cyathocalyx (Annonaceae)

The tree genus Cyathocalyx (Annonaceae) is distributed from India and Myanmar through Malesia to the Solomon and Fiji Islands. The classification of the genus is comprehensively revised for the first time. Broad concept of the genus has been adopted, which includes both Cyathocalyx sensu stricto and Drepananthus. In total, 37 species are recognized, including seven that are newly described. Many vegetative characters are useful for delimiting broad species groups, viz. : indumen and shape of leaf laminas; adaxially prominent or depressed leaf midribs; number of secondary veins per leaf; position of stomatal guard cells relative to other epidermal cells; distributions of crystals; and the occurence of phytoliths. Diagnostically valuable florescence and flower characters include the following: pedicel length; sepal shape; petal shape and texture; carpel indument; number of carpels per flower; stigma shape and size; ovule number and arrangement; Lorus shape. Fruit characters are also taxonomically important, viz. : number of monocarps per fruit; monocarp size, shape, and indument; presence or absence of monocarp stipes; pericarp thickness; shape, size and ornamentation of seeds; and raphe appearance (prominent, deppresed or flat). Seed ariel is absent in species except C. pruniferous. The pollen of Cyathocalyx is released as monads; individual grains are heteropolar, tectate-perforate, and inaperture. The shape of the pollens deforms significantly to enable harmenogathic changes in volume.
