Gross composition and biomass production of abaca (Musa textilis Nee) at different stages of growth

This study was conducted to measure the gross composition of abaca such as moisture content, dry matter and organic matter at different stages of growth and to establish relationship between growth parameters and biomass production. These were attained through destructive sampling of the identified sample plants. Different parameters such as moisture content, dry matter, organic matter and ash contents were determined. Regression and correlation analysis was also conducted to determine the relationships between biomass and growth parameters evaluated. Among the growth parameters gathered, highest variability was observed at the flag leaf stage. Fresh weight of the leaves, pseudo stem and corn continued to increase as the plant reaches near maturity. The moisture content of the pseudo stem was found to be high (85.24%) at the vegetative stage of the abaca plant relative to the fresh weight. Highest biomass was obtained from the leaves of the abaca plant which reaches near maturity of about 22.5% while higher organic matter accumulation was found in the leaves of the abaca plant specifically at the seedling and flag leaf stages of growth. A strong relationship was noted between biomass and plant height (r = 0.994).
