These studies were conducted under saline field conditions during therabi season of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 at the research area of AnimalNutrition Department, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Two brassicacultivars were tested for their physiological characters against four methodsof fertilizer application i.e. (1) broadcast, (2) side drilling (one side of theseed row), (3) side drilling (two sides of the seed row) and (4) placementbelow the seed. The results of two years pooled analysis indicated thatcultivar DGL significantly higher plant height, pods/plant and seed yield(kg/ha) than Con-II. Na plus contents absorbed in cultivar Con-II (98.42mmol/kg) were more than DGL (89.93 mmol/kg). Na plus: K plus ratio in DGLincreased significantly over Con-II. Leaf area index (LA 1) recorded in DGL(1.58) was significantly higher than Con-II (1.42). Similarly crop growth rate(CGR) for DGL increased to its maximum (1.98 g/m2/d) over Con-II (1.75g/m2/d). The pooled analysis also indicated that various yield componentsvaried significantly under different methods of fertilizer application. Placementof fertilizer in rows below the seed resulted in maximum plant height (210.9cm), number of pods (767.8) per plant, 1000-seed weight (3.15 g) andsignificantly higher seed yield (1513.00 kg/ha). As regards physiological traitsmaximum decrease in leaf Na plus contents (72.66 mmol/kg), maximum increasein leaf K+ contents (125.8 m mol/kg), Na+: K+ ratio (1.73), CGR (2.22 g/m2/d)and significantly higher net assimilation rate (3.58g/m2/d) were recorded alsoin the same treatment.
