This study contains a review of the concepts concerning breeding progress against a background of plant breeding history. The essence of plant breeding is covered as well as the factors determining the values of varieties and practical conditions limiting breeding progress. This work contains a review of the basic characteristics of field crops which have changed during the process of creative breeding. It also gives examples of the most spectacular achievements in plant breeding (especially in the group of cereals), pointing out the objective methodological difficulties in an estimation of the breeding progress.
