Dynamic development of molecular biology in the last years made it possible to identify genes affecting animal production traits. One of the two currently applied methods of identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) is the analysis of relationship between gene polymorphism and quantitative trait performance. Identified quantitative trait markers can be used in marker-assisted selection (MAS). The present article reviews papers dealing with selected candidate genes in cattle. Some of these genes are being already used in selection program. Concerning some other, analysed mainly in different species, the need of research is signalized. More research, including identifying new polymorphisms and their effect on production traits, is needed also in the genes already under investigation, especially when results are not always cleary
