The Canarian clam (Haliotis tuberculata coccinea R) has been characterized through histological and fertility studies. Histological studies of female gonads characterized six stages during the oogenic process (where the oogonia and five oocyte stages are included). As the gonad matures, the percentage of developing oocytes (Oc1, Oc2 and Oc3) dicreases, while the most mature ones (Oc5) increase, the amount of Oc4 remaining constant. The fertility study on mature females has proved a linear correlation between shell length and fertility for each size. The number of oocytes, higher for 55-65 mm. females, suggests that females above that size would be the suitable ones to use as broodstock
