Residual effect of three organic manures on soil bulk density, soil moisture and yield of wheat in Khashm Elgirba soil series

The residual effect of farm-yard manure (FYM), filtermud (FM) and bagasse (B) on soil bulk density and soil moisture content as well as the grain yield of wheat in Khashm Elgirba soil series were studied at a farm close to New HaIfa town during 1999/00 and 2000/01 seasons. In general, the soil bulk density in the top 0-15 cm of the soil profile significantly (P~0.05) decreased, whereas the soil mositure content showed a highly significant (P~O.O 1) increase in response to the residual effect of increasing rates of each of the studied organic manures. The B was more effective in maintaining its residual effect in improving the soil bulk density and soil moisture content compared to FYM and FM. The results showed a significant (P~0.05) increase in grain yield of wheat in response to the residual effect of high rates, viz: 45,60 and 75 tlha of the studied organic manures. The residual effect of FYM produced higher grain yield of wheat than th~ res idual effect of FM and B. The difference in the relatively lower quantities of grain yield of wheat produced by the FM and the B was not significant. B was most effective in reducing soil bulk density, while FYM was most effective in increasing yield of wheat. The addition of 60 tlha of either FYM or FM is suggested as a culturalpractice for Khashm Elgirba soi~ series in small holdings. Application of these bulky quantities of organic manures on large farms may be faced by practical problems.
