Effect of irrigation at different doil moisture levels on yield and yield components of sugarcane

A field experiment was conducted during 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons at Kenana Sugar Scheme, Sudan (latitude 13°10'N and longitude 32°40'E)in a heavy clay soil, with 65% clay, 24% silt, 11% -sand and pH '7.5-8.5. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of irrigation applied at the depletion levels of 25%, 50% and 75% of available moisture on yield and yield components of sugarcane (cultivar Co 6806). In both seasons, the treatments were applied three months after sowing. The results showed that irrigation based on the depletion of 75% of available soil moisture reduced a number of vegetative growth components and sugar yield in both seasons. The results also showed that irrigation at 50% depletion of available soil moisture produced significantly greater cane yield and cane juice with highest quality, but the increase in sugar yield was not statistically significant. The percentage of fibre increased with decrease in the amoun t of irrigation water.
