A Comparative study of irrigation scheduling in small farms in Khartoum State

The present study was carried out during May and June 2001 in small farms located on the river banks in the three cities of Khartoum to investigate irrigation scheduling followed by the farmers. Data were collected through instructed interviews with the farmers and direct field measurements of actually applied irrigation water, compared with calculated crop water requirements (CWR), estimated by the modified Penman equation. Farmers' irrigation scheduling were inconsistent with the calculated CWR. However, they were based on tradition or personal judgment. Field measurements showed a high tendency to apply more irrigation water than the calculated CWR (66.7%) of the farmers). Those who applied less than the calculated CWR were 33.3% of the farmers. The average rates of over- and under-irrigation were 55.5% and 33.7%, respectively
