Knight: A new cotton cultivar with a broad resistance to bacterial blight

Four upland cotton genotypes (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were evaluated across ten environments in the Sudan during 2002 through 2004. the objectives of the study were to assess yield performance, stability, field reaction to bacterial blight disease and earliness of maturity of Knight, a newly released cotton cultivar, and other three commercial cotton cultivars. results of combined analysis of variance for seed cotton and lint yields showed significant effects of genotypes, seasons, locations, and genotype by season interaction. Knight gave average lint yield advantage over Nour, Barac (67) B and Shambat-B of 9%, 17% and 29%, respectively. Estimates of parameters describing stability found Knight to be most stable, and widely adaptable to cotton growing areas of the Sudan. Knight showed highly resistant reaction to bacterial blight disease. It was early maturing and gave 61.5% of its yield in the first pick compared to 56% and 54% for Barac (67) B and Nour, respectively. It had yarn strength better than Barac (67) B. Since Knight has a wide genetic base (B2B3B6B7B9) for bacterial blight resistance, it can best be suited for areas more prone to high disease incidence
