Degradation of the fungicide azoxystrobin by soil microorganisms

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effect of Azoxystrobin on soil microorganisms capable of growing on Nitrate Agar and to isolate and identify the microorganisms capable of degrading the fungicide. The results showed that Azoxystrobin stimulated growth of soil microorganisms capable of growing on Nitrate Agar. The rate of degradation of the fungicide in the soil depended on its concentration. Members of the genera Nocardia, Arthrobacter and Mycobacterium were capable of using Azoxystrobin as the only source of carbon and nitrogen. Nocardia had the highest ability to decompose Azoxystrobin. Nocardia isolates were identified as Nocardia brasiliensis, Arthrobacter isolates as Arthrobacter terregens and Mycobacterium isolates 1 and 2 as Mycobacterium parafortuitum and Mycobacterium pheli, respectively. The results suggest that these isolates are valuable source of Azoxystrobin-degrading enzymes for use in enzymatic bioremediation
