Effect of irrigation to river water quality at Thamaka irrigation project

This paper focuses on the analysis of effect of irrigation to water quality of Mae Klong River. Thamaka irrigation project was selected as the representative for the basin, two water samplings from both irrigation and drainage canals were collected fortnightly from April 1998 to February 1999. The 12 indexes namely, temperature, EC, turbidity, pH, concentration of nitrate, ammonia, phosphate, and chloride, TS, TDS, BOD, and SAR were then analyzed to identify their statistics properties, relation to each other and relation to other factors. Results showed that the majority of parameters fitted well with normal distribution and some parameters fitted with log-normal distribution. The strong correlation among each group of parameters were identified such as correlation of nitrate, phosphate, chloride, TS, and TDS. The most important finding was that the major factors influenced these parameters were amount of rainfall and quantity and type of fertilizer applied to agricultural field. Finally, the irrigation water quality was exceptionally good and the drainage water quality was deteriorated just a little but the overall quality was still much above the standard of water quality was still much above the standard of water quality for natural water resources and irrigation water.
