Seaweed cultivation development in Indonesia

Recent development of seaweed cultivation/farming and industries in Indonesia has improved and reached a better condition compared to the past. Improvement in the current condition of the seaweed industry is supported by improvement of farmers skills, better quality seeds, easier licensing procedures and larger potential areas for farming/cultivation. Production of seaweed raw material resulting from cultivation (cottonii, spinosum, etc.) in 1996 reached 26.000 dwt. Mean while, domestic processors require a minimum of 16.200 dwt, while overseas processors import approximately 13.700 dwt. The development of the seaweed industry in Indonesia is directed towards improvement of raw material production, diversification its utilization in domestic end product industry and refinery.
