Nitrogen response of promising wheat lines in upper Northeastern Region

Response of wheat promising lines to nitrogen fertilizer was conducted in the northeastern parts of Thailand in 1996-1997 growing season. The trials were managed in the farmer fields at two villages namely, Banrae, Pangkone District, Sakon Nakorn Province and Bantonpueng, Na Kae District, Nakorn Panom Province. The experimental design was split plot with 4 replications. Two promisting lines of wheat (FNBW 8101-7 and FNBW 8301-5-5) together with check variety, Samoeng no.2 were arranged in main plots. Five nitrogen rates (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 kg N/rai, one rai area is equivalent to 0.16 ha) were assigned in subplots. Each treatment, 6 kg P2O5/rai (37.5 kg P2O5/ha) and 6 kg K2O5/rai (37.5 K2O5/ha) were added as basal application. Results at Bantonpueng village shown that two promising lines of wheat as well as check variety responded predominently to rates of nitrogen application. Regression equation of yield response for FNBW 8101-7, FNBW 8310-5-5 and Samoeng no.2 were Y = 168.02 + 15.65X - 0.37x**(2) (R sup(2) = 0.662), Y = 128.83 + 24.93x - 0.61x**(2) (R sup(2) = 0.578) and Y = 100.48 + 26.62x - 0.57x**(2) (R sup(2) = 0.862) respectively. From these derived equations, it was found that the maximum yield response for FNBW 8101-7, FNBW 8301-5-5 and Samoeng no.2 should be 21, 20 and 23 kg N/rai and gave yields of 334, 383 and 412 kg/rai respectively. When marginal rate of return was analysed it was indicated that amount of 13, 16 and 18 kg N/rai were optimum rate nitrogen fertilizer for FNBW 8101-7, FNBW 8301-5-5 and Samoeng no.2 and gave yields of 309, 372 and 395 kg/rai. Unfortunately, results at Banrae village could not be presented because of heterogeneity data were obtained.
