Optimum salinity of berried female mud crab (Scylla spp.) production

Experiment on rearing of gradvid female mud crab with 3 different salinity of sea water at 25, 30 and 35 ppt in cement tanks was carried out as Suratthani Coastal Aquaculture Development Center during August-November 1999. The size range of carapace width and weight of crab was 10.56-14.54 cm (average=12.50+-0.82., n=90) and 250-540 g (average=391.06+-70.66, n=90). About 50 percent by volume of water was changed every 2 days and water quality was measured before drained. The crab was fed with cockle every day of about 5-10 percent of tatal body weight. The result showed that the percentage of berried female mud crab reared in tanks at 25, 30 and 35 ppr of water salinity was 26.33, 23.33 and 53.33 respectifely. ANOVA also revealed that the average yield of barried female mud crab was not significantly different between 25 and 30 ppt (p GT 0.05) but significant when compared with 35 ppt (p LT 0.05).
