Virus Incidence in Native and Modern Cultivars in the Peruvian Highlands | La incidencia de virus de papa en cultivares nativos y mejorados en la Sierra Peruana

En el período 1985-87 se investigó la incidencia de siete virus de papa: PVX, PVS, APMV, APLV, PLRV, PVY y SB-22 en campos y tubérculos-semillas comunes de cultivares nativos y mejorados de agricultores de la Sierra Central y Sierra Sur del Perú. Como nativos se consideró el complejo de cultivares de las especies Solanum goniocalyyx, S. chaucha y S. tuberosum ssp. andigena, que son las mas sembradas en las zonas referidas. En general, las muestras resultaron muy infectadas (promedios de 62 a 98% de infección de virus por lote/por zona). PVX fue el virus de mayor incidencia (37-82%), seguido por PVS (19-53%); la incidencia promedio de PLRV y PVY fue de 0.7-6.8%. En particular, PLRV resultó muy difundido en lotes de cultivares nativos (24%). La incidencia del virus denominado SB-22 fue particularmente alta (39%) en el cultivar Ccompis (S. tuberosum ssp. andige.no) lo mismo que el APLV (25%) en el cultivar Huayro (S. chaucha). Para APMV se determinó, en das zonas investigadas, una incidencia mediana (3-13%). La incidencia de PVX y PVS fue significativamente mas alta en cultivares mejorados que en cultivares nativos, mientras que la situación con PLRV y PVY fue a la inversa. En Cusco se investigó la incidencia de los virus en campos de papa plantados con tubérculos-semillas distribuidos antes de 1986 por proyectos de desarrollo rural y en campos plantados con tubérculos-semillas de agricultores procedentes de ferias, vecinos, y otros. No se encontró diferencias significativas entre ambas categorías. Se discuten los resultados en relación a su relevancia para la producción de tubérculos-semillas de alta calidad fitosanitaria.

In the period 1985-87, the incidence of seven potato viruses: PVX, PVS, APMV, APLV, PLRV, PVY, SB-22 was studied in fields and tuber seeds of native and modern cultivars, using farmers' seed in the Peruvian central and southern highlands. A complex of cultivars from the species Solanum goniocatyyx, S. chaucha y S. tuberosum ssp. andigena which are the most important ones in these zones, has been considered as native cultivars. In general, samples and seed tubers were very infected by virus (average 62 to 98% of infected tubers per seed lot over zone). PVX was the most incident virus (37-82%), followed by PVS (19-53%); the average incidences per seed lot for PLRV and PVY were of 0.7-6.8% of infected tubers. PLRV was widely spread in native cultivars (24%). Incidence of the virus SB-22 was particularly high (39%) in cv. Ccompis (S. tuberosum spp. andigena); incidence of APLV was also high (25%) in cv. Huayro (S. chaucha). The incidence of APMV (3 to 13%) was determined to be intermedíate in these zones. Comparing seed tubers of native and modera cultivars significantly more tubers of modera cultivars were infected by PVX and PVS, whereas the situation for PLRV and PVY was the opposite. In Cusco, the virus incidence in farmers' seed tubers was compared to the present infection of seed tubers which had been originally distributed, before 1986, by rural development projects. No significant differences in terms of virus incidence were determined between these seed categories. Results are discussed in relation to their relevance for potato tuber seed production.
