If increases in trade are intra-industry in nature, the standard assumption is that adjustment costs will be less forbidding. This proposition had become known as the smooth adjustment hypothesis. The paper investigates the smooth adjustment hypothesis using the example of Hungarian food industry between 1992 and 2002.
