Collection , Classification and Evaluation of Lentil (Lens culinaris )Germplasm in West Azarbaijan

In 2000, Lentil-growing areas in West Azarbaijan/Iran were visited, and 51 accessions of lentil seeds from different eco-geographical regions were collected according to descriptions given by IPGRI . Ecogeographical characters of each site of collection were recorded. in 2001, these accessions were planted and evaluated at Kahriz Agricultural Research Station, using an augment design. The seeds were sown at a rate of 44 seeds /m2 and each plot consisted of one 2-m rows with 45 cm between rows. The results obtained from the experiments showed the existence of genetic variation in most characters such as grain yield , biological yield , harvest index , 100- seed weight, number and weight of pods and seeds / plant, number of branches, and seed protein content. This diversity can be used for selection and choice of suitable lines for breeding and cultivation in different areas.
