Demography of the predatory bug Andrallus spinidens (F.) (Het.: Pentatomidae) as affected by live and frozen prey

The perdatory bug A. spinidens is a potential biocontrol agent in rice field of the north Iran. In this study we assessed the demographic parameters of the predator when feeding on either live or frozen larvae of Galleria mellonella and Ephestia kuehniella under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C70% – 75% R.H.photoperiod (L:D) 16:8 h). Frozen larvae of both prey caused a prolongation in development time (36 vs. 32 days) and reduction on survival of immature stage of the predator. Demographic parameters of R0, rm. ë, T and DT for predators fed on live and frozen larvae of G. mellonella were 31.25, 0.0576, 1.0593, 60.29 and 11.85, and 3.81, 0.0197, 1.0198, 69.83 and 32.64, respectively. The respective values for the insect reared on live and frozen larvae of E. kuehniella were 30.85, 0.0581, 1.0598, 59.23 and 11.78, and 7.00, 0.0336, 1.0341, 61.17 and 19.72, respectively. The parameters of R0, rm and ë were significantly different between predators fed on live and frozen prey. However, to keep the quality of the predator rearing colony at a reasonable level, permanent use of frozen prey is not recommended, although it may be of use when live prey is not available.
