Genetic improvement of local population of Jajo melon (Cucumis melon L.) with ear-to- row selection method

In order to improve local population of Jajo melon with ear-to-row method an experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station of Gonbad in 2000 for three years. In the first year, 2000 seeds of the population were planted in 20 units (according to Gardner’s gridding method). Each unit consisted of 100 plants. Ten percent of the plants were selected for characters such as date of flowering, fruit length and width, sugar content and fruit yield of the plants. Seeds of selected plants were collected and dried. Half of these seeds were set aside and the other half were planted in separate rows. The best plants were identified. At the end of the second year reserved seeds of the best plants were compared with the primary local population in a replicated yield trial. In order to do this, a study was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. 1135 and 1185 produced the highest and the lowest average fruit weight, respectively. Selection 1135 produced the highest fruit yield. Based on the results 1135 and 1118 might be multiplied for further selection.
