Challenges and advances in water and nutrient management in nursery and greenhouse crops [USA]

Greenhouse and nursery crop production, also called the green industry, is one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors in the United States, representing well over 11 % of the national gross cash farm (agriculture) receipts. These crops are also the most intensively managed agricultural activity, characterized for their extremely high water and nutrient inputs. More specifically, water and nitrogen inputs annually can add up to 30,000 cube m haE-1 and over 5,000 kg haE-1, respectively. Unfortunately, water and fertilization use efficiencies in these crops are often very poor and are contributing to the pollution of surface and groundwater bodies. Current federal, regional and local regulations and ordinances on water and nutrient use (particularly nitrogen and phosphorous) and their discharge from these growing operations are becoming more challenging and the ability to comply with them will certainly have a major impact on the future of the green industry. This paper focuses on water and nutrient-related environmental issues and challenges affecting the green industry in the United States and highlights current research and technological advances that are helping to address them while remaining productive and competitive

[La produzione vivaistica e in coltura protetta, denominata anche industria verde, è uno dei settori agricoli in crescita più rapida negli Stati Uniti, rappresentando ben più dell'11% delle entrate lorde dell'agricoltura nazionale. Queste colture sono anche l'attività agricola a gestione maggiormente intensiva e sono caratterizzate da utilizzazioni estremamente elevate di acqua ed elementi nutritivi. Più specificamente, gli input di acqua e azoto possono raggiungere annualmente i 30.000 m cubi haE-1 e più di 5.000 kg haE-1, rispettivamente. Purtroppo le efficienze d'uso dell'acqua e dei fertilizzanti in queste colture sono spesso molto basse e vi è un contributo all'inquinamento dei corpi d'acqua superficiali e sotterranei. L'attuale normativa e le ordinanze federali, statali e locali sull'impiego dell'acqua e degli elementi nutritivi (in particolare azoto e fosforo) e sul loro scarico dalle coltivazioni stanno diventando sempre più vincolanti e la capacità di adeguamento alle stesse avrà certamente un impatto determinante sul futuro dell'industria verde. Questo contributo tratta dei temi ambientali relativi all'acqua e agli elementi nutritivi e delle sfide che l'industria verde deve affrontare negli Stati Uniti ed evidenzia gli attuali progressi scientifici e tecnologici che forniscono un supporto per affrontare questi problemi ambientali rimanendo produttivi e competitivi.]
