Correlation study for the determination of alcoholic strength by the use of pycnometer and refractometer

In order to measure alcoholic strength from small volume samples, a correlation study between an European Community (EC) adopted refractive index (RI) method and a reference pycnometric method was undertaken. Another RI method of increased accuracy was also developed. Alcoholic strength measured with both RI methods presents a relatively constant negative bias compared to results from the pycnometric method. Differences found between the two RI methods and the pycnometric method were 0.4-0.5 vol % by using RI developed in our laboratory and 0.6-0.9 vol % for measurement of RI by the EC method. Differences found between the two RI methods and the reference pycnometric method were statistically significant at 95% level. With the application of the calculated correction factors, the RI method can be used for the accurate measurement of alcoholic strength from small volume samples of alcoholic beverages

In relazione alla determinazione del grado alcolico di campioni di piccolo volume, è stato affrontato lo studio di una correlazione fra il metodo dell'indice di rifrazione (RI) adottato dalla Comunità Europea (EC) e il metodo picnometrico di referenza. E' stato sviluppato un altro metodo di più elevata precisione. Il tenore alcolico determinato con ambedue i metodi RI presenta un di più negativo relativamente costante ove lo si compari ai risultati del metodo picnometrico. Le differenze trovate tra i due metodi RI e il metodo picnometrico risultavano di 0,4-0,5% in volume usando il RI sviluppato nel nostro laboratorio e di 0,6-0,9% in volume per misure di RI con il metodo EC. Le differenze trovate tra i due metodi e il metodo picnometrico di referenza erano statisticamente significative al 95%. Con l'applicazione di fattori di correzione calcolati, il metodo RI può essere usato per determinare il titolo alcolico di piccole quantità di bevande alcoliche
