At present in all EU countries there is a close interrelation between people's level of education, the unemployment rate and the size of income. In all EU member-states the unemployment rate among people with tertiary education is substantially lower than among those with secondary or primary education. In Latvia this gap is even wider than on average in the EU. The unemployment rate among people with tertiary education in Latvia is more than 3 times lower than among people with secondary education (2.2 times on average in the EU). The wage level of people with tertiary education in Latvia is 2 times higher than that of people with secondary education. The importance of education is well understood by Latvian population. According to the results of the sociological research, nearly 90% of secondary school leavers in Daugavpils intend to continue their education in higher schools. However, it is necessary to note that professional preferences of school leavers do not always correspond to the actual needs of the country's economy and the structure of curricula being offered.
