The study was performed to investigate the methods of establishment of productive silver birch plantations on former agricultural lands. The silver birch container seedlings producing technologies used in Latvian forest nurseries were evaluated and the effect of the container types on morphological parameters and volume of production were assess. The field performance of silver birch container seedlings of different size and effect of three container types - Rootrainers Sherwood, Lannen Plantek 35 F and Lannen Plantek 25 on the seedlings field growth were evaluated in outplanting experiments on former agricultural lands. The target parameters of silver birch container stock are defined for afforestation of former farmlands. To assess the possibilities of summer and autumn planting of birch container seedlings the outplanting trial was staged in summer 2002.
