The primary source of semen bacterial contamination is the boar. Other sources are environment, personnel. During the period of time 2005 from May to December 104 semen samples from 24 boar ejaculates were analysed. Preputial flush, undiluted and extended semen samples were bacteriological examined at the Research Institute of Biotechnology and Veterinary Medicine Sigra. The most often found contaminants were Gram - negative bacteria of Enterobacteriaceae family from the intestinal microflora of animal waste that enter the semen through the preputial opening. The majority of contaminants were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. or proteus spp. Environmental contamination for instance; bacteria from the bedding and air in the barn also play an important role. Some representatives of this group are Aeromonas spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Alcaligenes spp. High correlation was found between total number of bacteria in a neat and extended semen, and medium close correlation between number of bacteria in prepution and extended semen. The high bacterial contamination of the prepution affects the total number of bacteria in neat and extended semen.
