[Recombinants of Salvia sclarea L. manifesting heterosis]

The effect of heterosis on some quantitative characters of Salvia sclarea has been determined. Androsterile lines of type 1 of different genetic and geografic provenience served as maternal material. Blood lines, hybrids, fertile hybrids possessing characters desirable to be transmitted to the respective backcross hybrid, were used as paternal material. It was found that all backcross hybrids displayed heterosis for plant height (4.9-55.0%) and inflorescence length (5.4-57.6%). Many backcross hybrids displayed heterosis for number of verticilis on the main axis of the inflorescence (2.0-100.0%). The availability of more number of such hybrids permits the creation of androsterile lines and fertile hybrid populations, cultivars with high content and yield of essential oils.
